State needs $543,000 to repair Capitol war statues
OLYMPIA - The state Department of General Administration is asking for $543,000 to restore war memorials and artwork on the Capitol campus in Olympia.
It also says it needs $60,000 a year for maintenance.
The department says the World War I memorial called “Winged Victory” has water damage.
Lights for the Vietnam War memorial are cracked and broken.
The engravings naming donors to the World War II memorial are popping loose.
Bronze statues, like those of the Korean War Memorial, need to be waxed each year.
The Department of General Administration has sent its request for repair money to the governor’s office. If Governor Gregoire approves, she will include it in next year’s supplemental budget.
